Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to describe the experiences of self-directed learning in nursing students.

Methods: To identify self-directed learning readiness of nursing students, a qualitatively driven mixed methods design with a supplemental quantitative component (QUAL+quan) was used. One hundred sixty-three nursing students from a nursing school in C-do participated in individual interviews (n=14) and completed a brief questionnaire (n=163). QUAL text data were analyzed by Colaizzi¡¯s approach and quan data were analyzed using x2 test, ANOVA with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.

Results: Five themes were (a) motivation, (b) resources management, (c) knowledge building, (d) uncertainty, and (e) sense of accomplishment. The mean score on self-directed readiness was 3.56¡¾0.40.

Conclusion: The findings from this study can be used to understand self-directed learning of nursing students.
